COMMITTEES

MCAE’s voice is amplified through the work of our members. Please consider joining one of our committees.

THE AWARDS COMMITTEE determines the categories and criteria for recognizing outstanding students, practitioners and leaders in adult education, solicits and reviews nominations, and selects the awardees and presenters.   MORE

MCAE annually honors outstanding students, practitioners and community leaders in adult education at the NETWORK conference each October. Nominators, but not the recipients, must be members of MCAE. The Committee determines the categories and criteria for recognition, solicits, and reviews nominations, and selects the recipients and presenters.

Awards are given for Outstanding Teacher, Outstanding Student, Outstanding Volunteer, Outstanding Counselor, Outstanding Administrator, Outstanding Support Staff and Outstanding Business or Labor Partner. In addition, MCAE annually presents a Special Recognition Award to an individual, organization or business or labor partner whose lifetime contribution merit this recognitions. The Working Conditions Committee also presents the Improving Working Conditions Award, which is given to a program that has demonstrated improvement in its working conditions through changes in policies and procedures.

THE CONFERENCE COMMITTEE plans and coordinates all aspects of MCAE’s annual NETWORK Conference for adult education practitioners and students in conjunction with MCAE staff. NETWORK draws more than 900 participants to more than 70 workshops each year, making it the largest and most successful adult education conference in New England.   MORE

The Conference Committee plans and coordinates all aspects of the annual NETWORK Conference in conjunction with MCAE staff. NETWORK draws more than 900 attendees to more than 70 workshop sessions that explore the best of current ABE practices. Committee responsibilities include determining workshop priorities, soliciting and selecting workshops, scheduling workshops and keynote speakers, and coordinating all logistical details prior to and during the conference.

THE DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE works to identify and pursue diversified funding for MCAE programs and general operation support.   MORE

The Development Committee works to identify and pursue diversified funding for MCAE programs and general operation support. MCAE is currently funded by the Adult and Community Learning Services (ACLS) division of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, The Boston Foundation, the Nellie Mae Foundation, conference registration, and membership contributions.

THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE solicits recommendations and prepares a slate of candidates for vacant MCAE board seats and officer positions. This committee reviews recommendations for geographic, ethnic, and organizational type representation that reflects the diversity of the ABE field. The committee presents the slate at the MCAE annual meeting for membership approval.   MORE

THE PUBLIC POLICY COMMITTEE is one of the primary ways in which MCAE is the voice of adult education. The Committee strategizes and implements an annual advocacy campaign to promote budgets, policy, and legislation that will positively affect adult basic education on both the state and federal levels. The Public Policy Committee is one of the primary ways in which MCAE is the voice of adult education. The Committee strategizes and implements an annual advocacy campaign to promote budgets, policy, and legislation that will positively affect adult basic education on both the state and federal levels.

The Committee’s activities include tracking state and federal budgets and legislation, training practitioners in effective advocacy including developing an ongoing relationship with elected officials, providing timely information and electronic action alerts to the membership through MCAE Alerts and an e-newsletter, and organizing legislative briefings and testifying before the legislature and policymakers.

THE WORKING CONDITIONS COMMITTEE focuses on improving working conditions for ABE and ESOL practitioners by identifying best practices in ABE/ESOL employment and developing strategies for improving conditions within workplaces and in the field as a whole.   MORE

The Working Conditions Committee focuses on improving working conditions for ABE and ESOL practitioners. Its purpose has been to identify best practices in ABE/ESOL employment and develop strategies for improving conditions within workplaces and in the field as a whole.

The Committee has updated the Standards for Quality Working Conditions in ABE/ESOL Programs. It has also conducted a Working Conditions survey of ABE/ESOL practitioners.
