PURPOSE AND HISTORYThe Massachusetts Coalition for Adult Education (MCAE) is a statewide membership organization of educators, adult students, individuals, organizations, and businesses which support equal educational opportunities for adults. MCAE works for the best quality delivery of adult education instruction and the advancement of professionalism in the field. We also serve as a resource for practitioners, policy makers, researchers and the media. MCAE was established in 1992 through the merger of the Massachusetts Coalition for Adult Literacy and the Massachusetts Association for Adult and Continuing Education as a private, nonprofit organization. The Board of Directors, comprised of long-standing leaders in the field of adult education, plays an active role in prioritizing and overseeing the organization's activities. Efforts to involve the individual members, be responsive to their suggestions, and anticipate their needs based on emerging federal and state education issues all contribute to maintaining this active membership base. MCAE strives to keep its members and general public informed through our web site, the MCAE Alerts on public policy and the general interest MCAE News e-letter. MCAE’s leadership in the public policy arena is especially strong as it develops and disseminates information regarding current and emerging adult basic education policies to its membership, policy makers and public officials. MCAE conducts legislative briefings, works with the Legislative Literacy Caucus, coordinates state and federal adult education testimony and participation at various hearings, distributes policy alerts, and communicates with our membership. Throughout the year, MCAE offers professional development opportunities with its staff and in conjunction with allied organizations. MCAE's annual NETWORK conference, held each fall, is the largest and most successful annual ABE conference in New England. NETWORK provides adult education practitioners the opportunity to interact with others in the field while attending thought provoking professional workshops and seminars. More than 70 workshops are offered, addressing all aspects of adult education. The conference is co-sponsored by SABES and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
